During our daily tasks, we can sometimes forget the ease and convenience our household appliances create for us. This, however, becomes evident rather quickly when they break or suddenly stop working.

It can be tedious and time-consuming when trying to organise the repairs of your appliances. This is where MasterCare steps in to make it easy and hassle-free for you.

What a Repair Plan Covers

The MasterCare Repair Plans are in place to take the sting out of appliance repairs, providing a cost-effective solution to have your household appliances covered.

With Mastercare, your repair plan covers your appliances when you need it most. This is something that every household can benefit from having in place. We can’t predict when our appliances will break, and this safeguards that.

With a repair plan, there is no need to fork out huge sums of cash for labour, call-out fees, and repairs. Instead, a repair plan is secured by small monthly payments that cover a variety of repairs over time, depending on which option is taken.

Repair Plans vs Warranties: The Difference

Now that we’ve gotten into the basis of what a repair plan does, this is not to be confused with the role of a warranty.

A warranty is in place as a certification of a product’s quality, state, and specifications. This is issued by the manufacturer and will be in place and valid for a given amount of years, differing from case to case.

A warranty does not act as a repair plan as it does not cover the appliance’s repair but rather confirms its quality.

MasterCare Repair Plan Options

We offer a wide variety of options to have your own repair plan that meets the exact needs of your requirements and budget. There are five-tier repair plans to choose from, varying in what they offer, cover, and plan for. These are namely:

  1. Essential + (R159 pm)
  2. Pro (R199 pm)
  3. Pro + (R259 pm)
  4. Premium (R299 pm)
  5. Black (R399 pm)

For a small monthly fee, you are able to secure the maintenance, care, and repair of your household appliances all in one concise plan. This saves both time and money for you now and in the future.

How To Repair A Cracked TV Screen

Tv screen not working

If your TV screen is damaged or broken, there are a few steps to take to decide how to get it fixed.

Repairing a cracked TV screen more specifically entails further attention as it is considered severe damage. In most cases, this calls for replacing the TV screen itself, but it must be noted that this is where it can get pricey.

General Overview

What causes damage to a TV screen?

In terms of the damage that can occur to a TV screen, this is categorised depending on the causes and severity of the damage. Differing from case to case, it is suggested to visually assess the damaged screen and then proceed to call the professionals before touching, moving or fiddling with the TV.

In general, damage can be caused in a variety of different ways:

  • Extreme temperature changes (heat/cold)
  • High humidity levels and moisture
  • Spraying cleaning products directly onto the screen
  • The impact of an object cracking or scratching the screen
  • Bending of the TV screen when moving it
  • Pressure from holding the screen when moving it

Can a cracked TV screen be fixed?

A cracked TV screen can be repaired or replaced by trained professionals. Due to a cracked screen being the most ‘intense’ type of damage, this would need to be assessed by a technician and conducted accordingly.

TV screens can be easily damaged and, due to their design, are somewhat fragile and delicate. Because of this, a cracked TV screen is a common repair and entails in-depth care.

Depending on the severity of the damage, the screen could potentially need to be replaced. However, this can end up costing the same amount as buying a brand new TV to replace the damaged one in question. This would need to be judged case to case, but it could be recommended to proceed with simply investing in a new TV instead of paying the same amount for a new screen alone.

Is it worth repairing a cracked TV screen?

As far as TV screen repairs go, a cracked screen warrants the highest cost due to the technicality of the repair. It would be worth repairing your TV if the repair costs are significantly lower than the price of a new TV.

What causes damage to a TV screen?

The Breakdown

Why TV screens cost so much

The price of TV screens can seem crazy when you look at how much a replacement screen would end up costing. The price is due to the intricate design and complex manufacturing of TV screens, as well as added costs such as shipping, profits and taxes.

A crack in the screen might seem minor; however, the entire lattice that allows the screen to function could be severely compromised. This will differ in severity from case to case, but in general, a cracked screen warrants a high fee to repair because of the complexity behind it.

Does my warranty cover a broken TV screen?

Generally, a warranty does not cover a cracked or broken TV screen due to the costs of the potential repairs. Repairing a cracked screen involves altering the damaged lattice of the screen itself. This is more invasive than repairing a surface-level scratch, for example, and so it would be too expensive for a warranty to cover.

Most warranties cover damages such as discolouration, screen imperfections, some lines, dots and streaking; however, this would have to be noticed within the stated period of time. Most of the TV warranties out there are likely in place for a year after purchase and should cover most manufacturing defects as stated.

Depending on the severity of the damage, it could work out cheaper to replace the TV instead of repairing the screen. A technician would determine this upon assessing the damages, after which the client would have to weigh up the options.

What To Do

Even with the best care and upkeep, things can happen that are out of our control, such as damage to our home appliances. It is recommended to assess the situation before jumping to conclusions on what to do, as this can sometimes worsen certain damages.

First, visually look at what seems to be wrong and take it from there. As mentioned, refrain from touching and fiddling with the broken appliance, as this can worsen things.

Next, get in touch with a trusted repair service provider and leave the rest up to the professionals. This will ensure the best care, repairing and handling of the case, which will save you time & money in the long run.

When it’s time to move your fridge, follow these steps to avoid damaging your appliance.

  • Step1: Clean the fridge and freezer sections. Remove all food items from the fridge and place them into a plastic container for the duration of the move.
  • Step 2: Switch off and unplug your fridge.
  • Step 3: If your fridge has an icemaker and water filter, be sure to disconnect these following the instructions in the user’s manual.
  • Step 4: Protect your cable by rolling it up and taping it to the back of the fridge.
  • Step 5: Remove the refrigerator doors as per the user’s manual instructions or secure them closed by using a bungee cord or rope. Keep all screws and loose pieces together in a zip lock bag.
  • Step 6: Wrap the exterior of the fridge in moving blankets or bubble wrap to prevent dings and scratches.
  • Step 7: Make sure you have enough help and be very careful when it comes to lifting the fridge onto the dolly cart. Your fridge must remain upright for the entire duration of the move.
  • Step 8: Once it has been moved to the truck, ensure that there are enough helpers to lift the fridge gently onto the truck, keeping it upright at all times. Once it is on the truck, secure it in place with a bungee rope. Drive slowly during transit.
  • Step 9: Once your fridge has arrived at its new location, carefully remove the bungee rope and gently lower it off the truck onto the dolly. (Make use of the helping hands here too).
  • Step 10: Once positioned inside, wait a couple of hours before you plug it back in. If for any reason the fridge was placed on its side, make sure you keep it upright for twice as long as it was on its side before you plug it back in. This is to allow the gas to resettle.
  • Step 11: Once you plug it back in, wait the amount of time recommended by the manufacturer before you add food. This can be from 24-72 hours.

When it comes time to move your washing machine, use this method to avoid damaging your appliance.

  • Step 1: Your washing machine is a heavy appliance, so ask someone to help you move it. Together, lift the machine on either side slightly and gently move it out so there is enough room at the back to reach the hoses and cables. Keep an eye on your flooring; avoid leaving scratches and scuffs.
  • Step 2: Unplug the appliance to cut off the power supply.
  • Step 3: Turn off the water supply to the machine to prevent it from leaking. This should be near the sink or beneath it.
  • Step 4: Place a bucket beneath the inlet pipe at the back of the washing machine, it will come in handy shortly. Have a towel within reach as you might need it too.
  • Step 5: Carefully detach the inlet pipe from the back of your washing machine (it is usually a blue pipe), keeping in mind that water will come out once it is removed. Empty the excess water into your bucket and use the towel to wipe up any water that may have spilled.
  • Step six: Use a pipe wrench or pliers to remove the other end of the inlet pipe from the wall. Tilt the hose and empty any remaining water into the bucket. Once again, make use of the towel as required.
  • Step 7: Remove the drain hose (or outlet pipe) from the waste pipe near or underneath the sink. It has a ridged design; you won’t miss it. Empty the drain hose of the wastewater. You’ll need to put a plastic blanking plug or disc inside the waste pipe / outlet pipe to prevent any further leakage.
  • Step 8: Remove the drain hose or outlet pipe from the machine. Tip up the drain hose or outlet pipe and empty the last of the water.
  • Step 9: Now it’s time to move your machine. Once again, keep in mind the weight of your machine – don’t try to do this alone. Lift the machine gently without changing its orientation. It must stay upright. Secure it in position if it will be in transit, and take care as you move it out of the vehicle.
  • Step 10: Check the area where the washing machine is to be placed and ensure that the ground is level. If it is not, you will need to get someone to help you lift the washing machine so that you can adjust the levelling screw at the foot of the machine.
  • Step 11: From this point, you are just going to run through steps one to eight backward. Start off by attaching the inlet pipe to the tap fitting on the wall where the washing machine is to be placed.
  • Step 12: To make this simple attach the outlet pipe to the draining pipe on the wall as well.
  • Step 13: Attach the inlet pipe to the inlet attachment at the back of the machine.
  • Step 14: Push the machine gently into place.
  • Step 15: Turn on the cold water tap that feeds the inlet pipe and switch on the washing machine to run a test wash

Tips for setting up your new HD or 4K television

Cables

You may notice that cables have changed since the last time you set up a TV. Television technology has advanced over the last few years and nowadays we use HDMI Cables. These carry high-resolution images and sound over one small cable. Pretty much all video sources, from gaming consoles to Blu-ray players and media streamers, use HDMI cables.

Sources

If you have a 4K or regular Blu-ray player to go with your new TV, it will probably auto-detect what your TV wants (1080p or 2160p).

Just because the cable box is capable of HD doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting HD. If you want a HD or 4K quality, you may need to pay your provider for the HD channels (unless they are included in your current package). You will also need to tune into the specific HD channels. If you have a new 4K TV, you should consider getting a 4K Blu-ray player.

Once you have all your cables attached and you are able to switch on the television, the next step would be to review the settings in the television to ensure you are happy with the picture quality you are receiving. Make yourself familiar with this process in case you need to come back later to make any changes.

It is also important to familiarise yourself with your home page. Typically, when the television starts up it will ask you a series of opening questions to help you optimize your settings, so do not to skip this process.

Once you are happy with all the settings, you can enjoy your new television.
